U.S. President Joe Biden held talks with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and announced a new military aid package. The phone conversation took place on October 16. The full details of the military aid package are not disclosed, but it is expected to be substantial: hundreds of air defense systems and a significant number of munitions. The total value of the weapons will amount to $425 million.
This was reported in a statement by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. The exact details of which weapons will be included in this package remain undisclosed.
"The new significant security assistance package for Ukraine is part of our ongoing efforts to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression," Jean-Pierre stated.
It soon became known that the package includes: air defense systems, air-to-ground munitions, armored vehicles, and "critically important munitions." The White House also assured that in the coming months, Ukraine will receive additional weapons from the U.S., including hundreds of air defense interceptors, dozens of tactical air defense systems, additional artillery systems, a significant amount of munitions, hundreds of armored personnel carriers, and infantry fighting vehicles, as well as thousands of armored vehicles.
In turn, Zelensky informed Biden about his victory plan. The leaders tasked their teams to conduct consultations regarding the next steps.
It is worth noting that the meeting between Biden and Zelensky was scheduled to take place during the "Ramstein" format meeting, which was planned for October 12. However, due to Hurricane "Milton," the leaders' meeting and the Contact Group session were postponed.
"The meeting of the leaders of the countries in the "Ramstein" format, which was postponed due to Hurricane "Milton," will take place next month," said White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre.
Before this, the advisor to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podolyak, also stated that the "Ramstein" format meeting could still take place before the end of October. Key elements of Ukraine's victory are planned to be discussed at this meeting.
Meanwhile, German sources confirmed that the meeting on aid to Ukraine "fell off" the shortened agenda of Biden's visit to Germany. It is unlikely that a meeting of the contact group on defense issues for Ukraine in the Ramstein format with the participation of the leaders of the countries will take place before the U.S. presidential elections.
It is important to remember that Ukraine's invitation to NATO is one of the key points of Zelensky's victory plan. The victory plan itself is expected to be the main topic of the upcoming peace summit. Since neither the prospects regarding the Alliance nor the victory plan in general will be discussed by allies in the near future, holding a second peace summit before the Ramstein - 25 also makes little sense.
