The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, has signed a document allowing several dozen citizens of the country to join the defense of Ukraine. All of them are volunteers. It is noted that a total of 181 individuals have expressed their desire to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
According to the Czech publication Český rozhlas, it is reported that soon 60 volunteers will be sent to Ukraine. Under Czech law, they needed to obtain permission from the president before doing so; otherwise, they would face criminal liability.
As stated by the press secretary of the head of state, Filip Platosh, all requests from volunteers are reviewed by the ministries of defense, internal affairs, and foreign affairs, and only after that, a decision is made. Currently, there are still applications from citizens awaiting a verdict.
Thousands of citizens from other countries are fighting in Ukraine. They have even formed special legions that fight alongside Ukrainians for the freedom of our country. Recently, Zelensky signed a law allowing foreigners and stateless persons to hold officer positions in the AFU. They can become officers through a contract.
It is important to note that previously, foreigners and stateless persons could only serve in private and sergeant positions. This new law enhances the personnel potential of the military. Additionally, the President of Ukraine has granted foreigners and stateless persons the right to sign a contract with the National Guard for 3-5 years. To enlist, they will need to contact the Territorial Center for Recruitment or go directly to a military unit.
Moreover, lawmakers supported a bill regarding the legal status of foreigners and stateless persons fighting against the Russian Federation. The bill allows foreigners and stateless persons defending Ukraine to obtain temporary residence permits or immigrate, even if their documents are expired. The document also grants family members of military personnel the right to temporary residence in Ukraine.
