The head of the CDU/CSU bloc and candidate for Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, stated that the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz is effectively isolated among European Union leaders. According to Merz, Scholz's foreign policy has completely collapsed. Furthermore, most heads of state and government in Europe are no longer willing to meet with him.
He expressed this opinion in a comment for n-tv. As an example, he cited the recent visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Poland, where they discussed policies regarding Ukraine. Merz emphasized that Scholz was absent from this meeting.
"Unfortunately, it must be acknowledged: European leaders have largely lost interest in communicating with the German Chancellor, who either remains silent or delivers lectures," Merz noted.
Merz added that he considers the "Chancellor to be absent." Interestingly, earlier, on October 14, Merz called for the transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine if Russia does not cease its attacks on civilian infrastructure. Then, on November 12, he expressed his readiness to negotiate with Putin if he wins the elections.
In Germany, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) is demanding an urgent discussion in the Bundestag regarding the dispatch of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was opposed to the transfer, is now isolated, and his influence has diminished. Moreover, Germany has fallen behind all its allies in terms of assistance to Ukraine.
Previously, in Berlin, other reasons were cited that allegedly hindered the transfer of long-range German missiles to Ukraine. Specifically, it concerns the impossibility of using the system without direct involvement of Bundeswehr personnel.
