Iran is demanding that the United States pay compensation amounting to one trillion dollars for damages caused by economic sanctions. These restrictions were imposed by Washington back in 1979 following the Islamic Revolution and the seizure of the American embassy in Tehran. This statement was made by General Ali Shamkhani, the deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
This was reported by Al-Alam. According to the general, these sanctions have inflicted significant economic damage on Iran, and now the United States is responsible for the harm caused.
"Americans must pay Iran compensation of 1 trillion dollars for the damage they have inflicted on our country by restraining it," the general stated.
The restrictions were first imposed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution when radical Iranian groups seized the American embassy in Tehran. As a result, Washington halted the import of Iranian oil and froze Iran's financial assets in American banks.
Subsequently, some of these restrictions were lifted, while others remained or were intensified. Following the signing of the nuclear deal in 2015, sanctions were gradually eased in exchange for Iran's commitment to limit its nuclear program. However, in 2018, Donald Trump, then President of the United States, withdrew from the nuclear agreement and reinstated all previously lifted sanctions, which remain in effect to this day.
It is worth noting that in the spring of 2024, the U.S. and the United Kingdom imposed new sanctions against Iran. Additionally, in the fall, the EU imposed sanctions on Tehran for supplying missiles to Russia.
