The Russian Federation has long shifted its economy towards military production. Russians have outpaced the European Union threefold in the manufacturing of ammunition and weapons, and they continue to ramp up their efforts. Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine has transcended regional boundaries, prompting Berlin to invest in increasing arms production.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated at an event hosted by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Arnsberg, as reported by Spiegel, that Russians are significantly ahead of Europe in ammunition and other armaments production. According to him, in just three months, Russia produces as much ammunition as all the countries of the European Union combined do in a year. In light of this, Pistorius believes that Germany should boost its investments in its defense capabilities.
The head of Germany's defense ministry also pointed out that the armed conflict in Ukraine is no longer regional in nature. Putin sees himself as a victor in the war against Ukraine, as evidenced by his recent speech, which indicates that Germany needs to scale up its arms production.
"Our security is a fragile asset. Germany must accelerate its efforts and invest more in its military potential," the minister stated.
Germany has begun extensive preparations for a potential war with Russia, which, according to experts, could have even more serious consequences for the country than the conflict in Ukraine. According to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the German Armed Forces are actively implementing a strategy known as "Operational Plan Germany." This document, which spans approximately 1,000 pages, includes a series of instructions for potential military actions.
At the same time, the "Free Democratic Party" (FDP) is calling for an urgent discussion in the Bundestag regarding the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who has been opposed to such deliveries, is now isolated, and his influence has waned. Consequently, Germany has fallen behind all its allies in providing assistance to Ukraine.
