The Council of the European Union has implemented a sanctions package against Iran. The reason pertains to the supply of ballistic missiles and drones to Russia for the war against Ukraine. Seven individuals and seven legal entities have been subjected to restrictions and bans.
All sanctioned individuals were involved in the development of weapons and their transfer to the Russian Federation, and they are also believed to have been connected to the delivery of arms to militant groups supporting peace in the Middle East. This information was reported by the EU Council press service.
Among those sanctioned are seven legal entities, including:
The restrictions also apply to a number of high-ranking officials from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as leaders of the "Iranian Aviation Industry" (HESA) and the "Aerospace Industries Organization" (AIO). Specifically, sanctions were imposed against:
All of them are now banned from entering EU countries, and their assets in the EU have been frozen, if any exist. In turn, European companies and residents are prohibited from cooperating with the sanctioned individuals.
It was recently revealed that under previously reached agreements, Iran has transferred short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. This involves several hundred missiles, but this is just the first batch, and further deliveries are expected to continue.
Sean Savett, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, also confirmed that the delivery of missiles to Russia has taken place. He stated that the U.S. had previously warned about the deepening partnership between Moscow and Tehran, which is a major concern as it will inevitably lead to an escalation of the war in Ukraine.
Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to the head of the President's Office, stated that the transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia could accelerate the decision of Ukraine's Western partners to allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory. This issue is expected to be resolved in a short period of time. New sanctions from the U.S. are also anticipated, not just from the EU.
