German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Vladimir Putin has suffered a devastating defeat in Ukraine. He has achieved none of his objectives. His attempts to weaken NATO have failed, and hopes of establishing control over Ukraine have proven futile.
According to t-online, Scholz emphasized that the Russian leader has not been able to implement any of his plans.
"Putin aimed to seize Ukraine, establish a puppet government, halt its Euro-integration, and weaken NATO. However, the outcome has been the opposite," Scholz declared.
He noted that today the Alliance has gained two new members – Finland and Sweden, and NATO countries have significantly bolstered their defense capabilities, reaching the target spending level of 2% of GDP. In contrast, Ukraine has become a united nation that is confidently moving towards the EU and possesses a strong army that is heroically fighting against Russian forces.
Scholz stressed that the key task now is to ensure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. He also mentioned that he is willing to speak with Putin again, despite the fact that the previous conversation did not change the Kremlin's position.
"I made it clear that Europe will not stop supporting Ukraine. And if necessary, I am ready to repeat this again," the Chancellor added.
Recall that in November this year, the first phone conversation between Scholz and Putin in two years took place. Despite the unchanged position of the Kremlin, Scholz believes that such dialogue is important. At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine emphasized that these negotiations would not contribute to achieving a just peace, and President Volodymyr Zelensky referred to them as "opening a Pandora's box".
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte believes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should stop criticizing the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz. Rutte considers such statements towards the German leader to be "unjustified." This particularly pertains to comments regarding long-range Taurus missiles.
As a reminder, Germany has yet to respond positively to Ukraine's calls to provide Taurus missiles for strikes on targets in the Russian Federation. Allegedly, Berlin is concerned about its own security. At the end of November, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz again opposed the transfer of long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. He urged the leader of the Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Merz, not to support this idea either.
