During a recent visit to Berlin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz with significant requests. He asked for permission to strike Russia with Western weapons and sought guarantees for a swift NATO membership. However, Zelensky did not receive a positive response from Scholz.
This is reported in an article by Bild. The article also mentions that the Bundeswehr no longer plans to provide heavy equipment to Ukraine beyond what has already been announced. Consequently, after the dispatch of 18 Leopard 2 tanks, there will be no further deliveries, despite the Bundeswehr having around 300 of such tanks available. The same applies to other types of equipment, including infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, and self-propelled howitzers.
The publication states that Zelensky conducted a tour of Europe, proposing his "victory plan," but obtaining urgent support from Western countries proved to be challenging. Zelensky put forth two main demands: permission to use Western weapons against strategic targets in Russia and an expedited process for Ukraine's NATO membership with corresponding security guarantees. However, these proposals were met with little enthusiasm in Berlin. According to Bild, Scholz did not give a definitive "no," but neither did he provide a positive response.
Political scientist Carlo Masala added that Zelensky did not succeed in the key points of his plan, and his European tour was unsuccessful. The situation was further complicated by the cancellation of U.S. President Joe Biden's trip to Berlin.
After meeting with Zelensky, Olaf Scholz announced military aid to Ukraine. He stated that Germany, along with its partners, will launch a significant aid package worth 1.4 billion euros, which includes Iris-T and Skynex air defense systems, artillery systems, and drones.
Scholz also confirmed the supply of the previously announced arms package worth 600 million euros. He condemned the Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure aimed at undermining the morale of the population.
It should be noted that Zelensky traveled to European capitals to secure support from Western partners. The President's Office stated that the next steps following the presentation of Ukraine's victory plan depend on Western leaders.
