Mike Johnson, who has been serving as the Speaker of the House for nearly a year, recently made several statements regarding the future funding for Ukraine. Following the April bill for $61 billion to assist Kyiv, Johnson acknowledged that his support for further financial aid to Ukraine is significantly weakening. He noted that he lacks appetite for new financial packages for Ukraine and expressed hope that such measures would not be necessary.
Johnson emphasized that if Donald Trump wins the presidential election, he could potentially resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. This was reported by Punchbowl News. According to Johnson, Trump could persuade Vladimir Putin to end the war, which aligns with the sentiments of a considerable portion of the global community that is weary of the protracted fighting.
"If President Trump wins, I believe he could truly put an end to this conflict. I think he would call Putin and tell him that enough is enough. And I think everyone is tired of this and wants it resolved. However, if Kamala Harris becomes president, I don’t think it will end, and that’s a dangerous, desperate scenario," Johnson stated.
Nevertheless, the Speaker warned of a potential dangerous scenario if the current U.S. administration remains in power. In this case, Johnson believes the war could drag on indefinitely, posing risks to international stability.
At the end of September, Johnson demanded that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky immediately dismiss Ukrainian Ambassador Oksana Markarova. The reason was Zelensky's visit to an ammunition factory in Scranton, organized by Markarova. Johnson viewed this as a "campaign event" allegedly supporting Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and interfering in the U.S. elections.
He also claimed that Trump could end Russia's war against Ukraine by demonstrating strength. He suggested that this is what America has been lacking during Joe Biden's presidency. Additionally, in rival countries, there are fears of Trump, so they will heed his demands, Johnson noted.
Recall that Zelensky stated in an interview with BBC that the hot phase of the war in Ukraine could end by the end of 2024, and negotiations with Russia and personally with Vladimir Putin are possible if the international community defends Ukraine's interests in the process.
