The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, is planning to appoint a special representative for resolving the war in Ukraine. Sources indicate that a high-ranking individual will be chosen for this role. It is reported that they will be capable of finding a compromise solution to end the conflict with Russia.
According to Fox News Digital, citing insiders, one person familiar with these plans mentioned that "we will soon see a high-ranking special envoy with a significant reputation tasked with seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict." It is expected that this position will be voluntary, similar to how Kurt Volker served as the special representative for Ukraine from 2017 to 2019.
Trump has already made swift announcements regarding key appointments in his team, having appointed Congressman Michael Waltz from Florida as his national security adviser, and Senator Marco Rubio as a candidate for Secretary of State. Additionally, Steven Witkoff will become his special representative for the Middle East.
It is also noted that Trump has repeatedly stated that he is capable of reaching a peace agreement with the Presidents of Ukraine and Russia - Zelensky and Putin, although details of his strategy are currently scarce. According to the Wall Street Journal, several staff members are discussing the possibility that the Americans may propose a compromise to Ukraine, which could include establishing a demilitarized zone along an 800-mile front line and leaving the occupied territories under Russian control, which constitutes about 20% of Ukraine's territory. Among the proposals being discussed is a 20-year moratorium on Ukraine's NATO membership, which critics argue appears as a concession to Putin. Additionally, the Washington Post notes that no one has had a conversation with Putin asking him to avoid escalating the conflict, although Trump's transition team has not yet confirmed this information.
