The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that addressing the issue of the war in Ukraine will be a top priority once he takes office on January 20. The situation in the Middle East will also be a priority for him, although he considers this matter to be less complex.

Trump made these comments in an interview with the French publication Paris Match. He also mentioned that he had a “good meeting” with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris.

“I think we need to resolve the Ukraine issue with Russia. Both countries are suffering losses that no one can believe. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers are dying,” Donald Trump remarked.

According to the future head of the White House, this issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible. He added that the Middle East is also a major priority for him, but, as he noted, “the situation there is less complicated than that of Ukraine and Russia.”

Trump also positively assessed his recent meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris. Recently, he wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that “there must be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin.”

“We had a good meeting with President Zelensky,” he concluded.

Zelensky Met with Trump in Paris

On December 7, Volodymyr Zelensky met with Donald Trump in Paris. The latter arrived in the French capital for the opening of the legendary Notre-Dame (Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris) wearing symbolic attire—a blue suit and a yellow tie. Following the meeting with Trump, Volodymyr Zelensky stated that it was productive and that Trump is determined. In Zelensky's view, peace through strength is possible. He added that the value of the meeting lay in the fact that partners heard Ukraine's clear position "not from third parties".

Zelensky also mentioned that the meeting with President Trump was "good," discussing "important matters on the battlefield in Ukraine and the global situation—from our front to North Korea." However, this did not prevent the Ukrainian leader from rejecting the American's proposal for an immediate ceasefire in response to the statement that Ukraine was supposedly ready for an agreement with Russia.
