Following the scandal involving Ukraine's ambassador to the USA, Oksana Markarova, who failed to adequately represent Ukraine's interests during her time in Washington, Kiev is considering three candidates for her replacement. Among them are: Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak, Ihor Zhovkva, former Minister of Economic Development of Ukraine Tymofiy Milovanov, and the current ambassador of Ukraine to Brazil, who previously served as ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk. A final decision on who will replace Markarova has yet to be made, but one of these candidates is the most likely.
Sources from the Informator have reported this. According to them, the most probable candidate for the position of U.S. ambassador is Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.
Zhovkva has long held a key role in Ukraine's foreign policy matters, working directly with international partners, particularly in the U.S. As a diplomat, he has experience in engaging with Western countries and understanding their political and economic interests. His candidacy seems logical after Markarova was held responsible for President Zelensky's visit to Pennsylvania alongside the state's Democratic governor, Josh Shapiro.
Republicans immediately accused Zelensky of attempting to influence the election results in this crucial state, which significantly affected Trump's chances in the presidential election. Following this, House Speaker Johnson called on Ukraine to promptly replace its ambassador in the U.S. Interestingly, Trump ultimately won the election in Pennsylvania.
Unlike Markarova, who is a politician and may not be familiar with the nuances of organizing visits for top officials, Zhovkva is a professional diplomat. For this reason, he is likely the only person who remained in the president's office despite the change in presidency.
Since 2014, Zhovkva has led the Main Department of Foreign Policy and European Integration in the administration of President Poroshenko. He did not leave after Zelensky's victory and currently serves as the Deputy Head of the President's Office.
There is still no final decision regarding Zhovkva. According to Informator sources, the candidacy of former Minister of Economic Development Tymofiy Milovanov is also under consideration. He is known for his close ties to international financial organizations, which could be beneficial in the context of working in the U.S. Milovanov also has a good understanding of the language of American Republicans, which could be an advantage.
However, Milovanov is associated with the George Soros Foundation and other international organizations. Additionally, he is closely linked to the political party "Holos," which was founded with the support of Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Pinchuk.
Another possible candidate is Andriy Melnyk. He is the current ambassador of Ukraine to Brazil, having previously served as ambassador to Germany. Melnyk is known for his controversial statements on the international stage, particularly regarding support for Ukraine in Europe. He also has extensive experience as a diplomat. However, his candidacy is currently considered the least likely.
Earlier, Informator reported that the position of ambassador to the U.S. was offered to former Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, but he declined.
